Investigators said the Dodge, driven by Smith, was traveling northbound when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered off the roadway and struck a safety barrier before re-entering the roadway and colliding with the Honda.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and located Smith unconscious inside his vehicle. He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
The driver of the Honda, a 59-year-old woman, was not injured in the crash. Authorities have not indicated that impairment or speed has been confirmed as factors, and the exact cause of the collision remains under investigation by the Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit.
