Quechee Gorge Suicide Hartford, Vermont: Further details released after husband reported VT mom suicidal intent before Quechee Gorge Bridge tragedy
Hartford, Vt. — Authorities in Hartford are continuing to investigate a suspected suicide at Quechee Gorge Bridge after new details emerged about the circumstances leading up to the incident.
According to the Hartford Police Department, officers responded to the Quechee Gorge area at approximately 1:56 p.m. on April 13, 2026, for a welfare check. The call was prompted by a man who reported receiving a text message from the mother of his child indicating possible suicidal intent.
Preliminary findings indicate the woman bypassed a safety barricade on the bridge before the incident occurred. Police said a bystander attempted to intervene but was unable to stop her from going over the edge into the gorge.
Emergency responders immediately launched a search operation; however, the woman was not located before being carried downstream by the current. Search efforts remained ongoing as of the latest update.
Authorities have not released the identity of the individual, pending formal identification and notification of next of kin.
The case remains under active investigation as officials work to determine the full sequence of events.
