In Loving Memory of Jeffrey Koons
Family, friends, and members of the Santa Clarita community are mourning the loss of Jeffrey Koons, a 47-year-old man whose death was discovered on Wednesday in a parking lot at Valencia Town Center.
According to authorities, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in an overflow lot south of Magic Mountain Parkway. The parking area was reportedly being used by nearby Auto Row dealerships to store vehicles. Investigators said a dealership employee noticed an older-model vehicle parked among rows of Mercedes-Benz sedans and contacted authorities to have the situation checked.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Koons deceased inside or near the vehicle. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau was notified and responded to conduct an investigation. Authorities later reported finding a firearm and a shattered window near the scene.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as Jeffrey Koons, describing him as an unhoused individual. Investigators believe he had been living in the vehicle where he was found at the time of his death.
Officials said the investigation is being treated as an apparent suicide. Lt. Michael Modica of the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau stated that detectives and medical examiners who initially responded to the scene reached a preliminary determination based on the evidence present. However, as of Thursday morning, an autopsy had not yet been completed, and the Medical Examiner’s Office was expected to make the final official determination regarding the cause and manner of death following its examination.
