Jakiya Smith Death, Obituary: In Loving Memory of Jakiya Smith
The Monroe County community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 26-year-old Jakiya Smith, whose life was tragically cut short following a single-vehicle crash on the evening of June 17, 2026. Her passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. As loved ones come to terms with this devastating tragedy, they are remembering a young woman whose life centered around those she cared for most, especially her children.
According to the Monroe County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 7:27 p.m. on Highway 25, south of Airport Road. Preliminary reports indicate that Jakiya was driving an SUV southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. The accident happened less than a mile from her home, making the heartbreaking loss even more difficult for those closest to her.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and worked tirelessly to provide lifesaving care. Jakiya was initially transported to North Mississippi Medical Center-Gilmore in Amory before being transferred to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo for advanced treatment. Despite every effort by medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries at 2:19 a.m. on June 18, 2026.
The tragedy is made even more painful by the fact that Jakiya’s three young children were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Two of the children were airlifted from Monroe County Airport to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for specialized medical care, while the third child was transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. At this time, their conditions have not been publicly released as family members continue to hope and pray for their recovery.
The response to the accident involved numerous emergency agencies working together during the critical moments following the crash. Personnel from the Becker-Athens Fire Department, Amory Fire Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol all responded to assist. The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
While the investigation seeks answers, the focus for many remains on remembering the life of Jakiya Smith. At just 26 years old, she leaves behind grieving family members, cherished friends, and children who now face an unimaginable loss.
