Preliminary reports indicate that Jakiya was driving an SUV southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. The accident happened less than a mile from her home, making the heartbreaking loss even more difficult for those closest to her.

Jakiya was initially transported to North Mississippi Medical Center-Gilmore in Amory before being transferred to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo for advanced treatment. Despite every effort by medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries at 2:19 a.m. on June 18, 2026.

Two of the children were airlifted from Monroe County Airport to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for specialized medical care, while the third child was transported to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Personnel from the Becker-Athens Fire Department, Amory Fire Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Mississippi Highway Patrol all responded to assist.
