In Loving Memory of Crystal Marie Cruz
Family, friends, and members of the Tucson community are mourning the tragic loss of a woman who died following a devastating two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Stone Avenue and Drachman Street on Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities have identified the victim as Crystal Marie Cruz, 34. According to the Tucson Police Department, officers responded to the crash at approximately 2:30 p.m. on June 3 after receiving reports of a serious collision involving a 1995 Dodge Neon and a 2015 Toyota Highlander.
Investigators said Cruz was driving the Dodge Neon northbound on Stone Avenue when the collision occurred. A Toyota Highlander traveling southbound on Stone Avenue was attempting to make a left turn onto Drachman Street when it entered the intersection. The two vehicles collided, resulting in severe damage and critical injuries.
Emergency personnel with the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene and provided medical assistance to those involved. Cruz and a passenger in her vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical staff, Cruz was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Authorities reported that the force of the collision ejected the front-seat passenger from the Dodge. Investigators also stated that neither Cruz nor her passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, a factor they believe contributed to the severity of the injuries sustained.
According to witness statements, Cruz had been swerving through traffic, moving between lanes, and traveling at a speed significantly above the posted 30-mile-per-hour limit before the crash. Detectives said both the Toyota driver’s failure to yield to oncoming traffic while making a left turn and Cruz’s driving behavior prior to the collision contributed to the incident.
A DUI Unit officer determined that the 41-year-old driver of the Toyota was not impaired. Police noted that medical records may later reveal whether alcohol or drugs were present in Cruz’s system, though no final determination has been released.
