Two people have died following a collision between a train and a pickup truck near Savanna, Illinois, authorities confirmed.

The victims were identified by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office as Connor L. Sandrock, 21, and his father, Benjamin G. Sandrock, 50, both of rural Lyndon in Whiteside County.

According to investigators, the crash occurred at approximately 3 p.m. at a private railroad crossing just off Illinois Route 84, across from the Savanna Tri-Township Airport. Officials said the two were traveling in a pickup truck towing a boat and trailer when the vehicle was struck by a southbound train.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies responded to the scene, including fire departments from Savanna, Thomson, and Clinton, Iowa, along with local law enforcement, conservation police, and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the collision. The incident remains under investigation.

The deaths have had a significant impact on the surrounding communities in Carroll and Whiteside counties, where the Sandrock family is known. Funeral arrangements are planned in Prophetstown, with burial to follow in Tampico.
