Thea Shelton Death, Obituary

The community of McMinnville, Tennessee, is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Thea Shelton, an 8-year-old student at Hickory Creek Elementary School, whose life was tragically taken on Sunday in a devastating incident that has shaken families across Warren County.

According to Warren County Sheriff Jackie D. Matheny Jr., deputies were dispatched at approximately 2:10 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2026, to a home in the 200 block of Greenwood Drive after receiving a request for a welfare check. When deputies arrived and conducted an initial assessment, additional officers were called to assist.

Authorities later entered the residence and discovered three individuals deceased inside the home. Investigators determined that Joseph Nicholas Shelton Jr. fatally shot Randi Jean Shelton and their daughter, Thea Shelton, before turning the gun on himself in what officials have described as an apparent murder-suicide. Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community, though the investigation remains active.

Thea Shelton was a young student at Hickory Creek Elementary who was remembered by those who knew her as a bright, kind, and joyful child. Teachers, classmates, and community members are grieving the loss of a young life filled with promise, laughter, and innocence.
