Essex, VT — The Essex community is mourning the tragic loss of Stephen G. Campbell, 76, who died following a fatal dog attack at his home on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

According to the Essex Police Department, officers responded at approximately 3:20 p.m. to 179 Brigham Hill Road after a serious animal attack was reported. First responders from Essex Rescue and the Essex Town Fire Department found Campbell had suffered severe injuries from an attack by a large male pitbull named “Jack” and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members were present at the time, including the dog’s owner, who intervened to stop the attack. The dog was voluntarily surrendered to Essex Animal Control and will be transferred to the Chittenden Humane Society for euthanasia.

Investigators from the Essex Police Department and the Vermont Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are reviewing the incident. The OCME will determine the official cause and manner of death.

Police confirmed that Jack had a prior attack in January 2026, which led the Essex Town Selectboard to classify him as a “potentially vicious dog” and impose strict requirements for confinement, warning signs, and training. Authorities note that the owner had complied with these orders.
