Sheriff William E. Hilton Death, Obituary: HINESTON, LA — The Hineston community is mourning the tragic and untimely death of Sheriff William E. Hilton, who passed away on Monday following a horrific hit-and-run incident. Sheriff Hilton, a devoted public servant, was struck by a vehicle in an incident reported just before 1 p.m., and despite emergency medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries.
According to law enforcement, deputies and Louisiana State Police troopers responded quickly after Sheriff’s Dispatch received a report of a hit-and-run in the Hineston area, where the suspect allegedly ran over the victim and intentionally fled the scene. Upon arrival, deputies found Sheriff Hilton with severe injuries and immediately transported him by helicopter and later by Pafford Ambulance to a local hospital. His condition deteriorated, and he tragically passed away from the injuries sustained.
Authorities quickly obtained a description of the suspect vehicle, a blue Nissan Moreno, and issued an alert to local law enforcement. Troopers later spotted the vehicle traveling eastbound on LA 28 at Leavines Road at high speed. Despite attempts to stop the vehicle, the suspect refused and led law enforcement on a dangerous pursuit at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Spike strips were deployed, successfully bringing the vehicle to a stop at LA 28 and Cloverleaf Boulevard, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
Sheriff Hilton’s passing is a devastating loss to the community, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, and law enforcement across the state. He was widely respected for his leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to protecting the people he served.
