Ross Abelow Death, Obituary: In Loving Memory of Ross Abelow

In Loving Memory of Ross Abelow

Today, we pause with heavy hearts to remember and honor the life of Ross Abelow, a man whose passing leaves a deep sense of loss among family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His departure feels tragically premature, and yet the legacy he leaves behind is one defined by integrity, faith, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to living life with purpose.

For those who knew Ross from the earliest days, his story began in childhood friendships that lasted a lifetime. Having formed bonds as early as second grade at PS117Q in Briarwood, Queens, New York, Ross was someone whose loyalty and connection to others stood the test of time. Those early friendships became lifelong relationships built on shared memories, respect, and genuine affection.

Ross was widely admired not only for his intellect and accomplishments but for the kind of person he was at his core. A deeply faithful and practicing Jew, he lived by values rooted in tradition, principle, and compassion. Through his words and actions, Ross demonstrated what it truly means to strive to be a “mensch.” In the truest sense of the word, he embodied integrity, honor, and the courage to speak up for what he believed in. His character served as an example for those around him, reminding others of the importance of living with honesty, dignity, and moral clarity.

Professionally, Ross was an accomplished attorney and teacher, respected for both his knowledge and his ability to communicate with people from all walks of life. His career reflected his dedication to justice, learning, and the exchange of ideas. He had a remarkable ability to engage others in conversation, whether discussing law, life, or the everyday stories that make human connections meaningful.

Beyond his professional life, Ross was someone who fully embraced the community around him. He served as the Social Affairs Director of Park Avenue Synagogue, where he played a meaningful role in bringing people together and strengthening the bonds within the congregation. His dedication to the synagogue and its community reflected the depth of his faith and his belief in the importance of shared traditions and communal life.

Ross was also, at heart, a proud New Yorker—the kind who carried the spirit of the city with him wherever he went. A devoted New York Mets fan, he represented that classic old-school New York personality: witty, thoughtful, deeply loyal, and always ready with a story. His humor and storytelling made him unforgettable in any room he entered. Friends and colleagues often remember him as a gifted raconteur, someone whose stories and laughter could bring people together and brighten even the most ordinary moments.

But perhaps the role Ross cherished most was that of father. He was deeply proud of his three dynamic daughters, and his love for them was evident to everyone who knew him. His guidance, support, and example shaped their lives, and the values he carried—integrity, faith, and compassion—will undoubtedly continue through them.

Outside of life’s responsibilities, Ross enjoyed the simple pleasures that made him who he was: sharing conversation with friends, enjoying a good laugh, and occasionally raising a glass—perhaps a shot of Jack Daniel’s or a beer at the historic McSorley’s on 7th Street. These moments reflected the warmth and authenticity that defined him.

The loss of Ross Abelow is deeply felt by all who knew him. He was a man of character, a devoted friend, a loving father, a thoughtful teacher, and a respected member of his community. His presence made the world a richer place, and his absence will be profoundly felt.

Yet his legacy lives on—in the lessons he taught, the friendships he nurtured, the faith he practiced, and the family he loved so deeply. Those who knew Ross will continue to carry forward the example he set: to live with principle, to remain loyal to friends and tradition, and to strive always to be a true mensch.

May the memory of Ross Abelow be a blessing.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
