In Loving Memory of Nigel Barry Young

With deep sadness and heartfelt sympathy, family, friends, and the wider community are mourning the loss of Nigel Barry Young, a 65-year-old resident of Portland, Oregon, whose life was tragically cut short following a skiing accident on Mt. Bachelor. His passing has left loved ones grieving the sudden loss of a man who was enjoying time outdoors with friends when tragedy struck.

According to officials, the devastating incident occurred on Monday, March 9, 2026, at approximately 2:22 p.m. when Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol received a report of an injured skier on the Wanoga Way Ski Trail. The trail, located on the east side of Mt. Bachelor and accessible from the Cloudchaser Lift, is known as an intermediate-level run and is frequently used by experienced recreational skiers.

Ski Patrol responded immediately and were the first to arrive at the scene. Upon reaching the skier, they found Nigel Barry Young unresponsive, without a pulse and not breathing. Emergency crews quickly began life-saving efforts while additional responders were called to assist.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Bend Fire & Rescue, and Airlink medical responders were dispatched to the scene to support the rescue and medical response. Despite extensive resuscitation efforts carried out by both Ski Patrol and Bend Fire medics, Nigel was tragically pronounced deceased at approximately 2:56 p.m.

Authorities reported that Nigel had been skiing with three friends at the time of the incident. His companions had been skiing ahead of him and did not witness the crash itself, leaving investigators to piece together what may have occurred on the trail. Officials noted that Nigel was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident; however, investigators believe the injuries he sustained were not survivable.

The sudden loss of Nigel Barry Young has deeply affected those who knew and loved him. For his family and friends, the tragedy represents more than a tragic accident—it is the loss of a beloved individual whose presence brought meaning, warmth, and connection into their lives.

At 65 years old, Nigel had lived a life filled with experiences, friendships, and memories that touched many people. Those closest to him remember him as someone who enjoyed the outdoors and valued time spent with friends and loved ones. The fact that he was sharing a day on the mountain with companions reflects the type of moments he cherished—simple joys, fresh air, and the thrill of adventure.

Skiing, for many, is more than a sport; it is a passion that brings people together and connects them with nature. For Nigel, the slopes of Mt. Bachelor were likely a place of excitement and enjoyment, a place where he could share experiences with friends and create lasting memories.

The tragedy has also resonated throughout the skiing community and the broader Central Oregon area. Accidents in outdoor recreation, while rare, serve as sobering reminders of the unpredictable nature of life and the risks that can sometimes accompany the activities people love.

Authorities say the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office continues to coordinate with Mt. Bachelor staff as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident. Officials have also expressed their appreciation for the quick response and professionalism of the Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol, Bend Fire & Rescue, and Airlink teams who worked tirelessly in their efforts to save Nigel’s life.

While the investigation continues, those who knew Nigel are left to navigate the difficult journey of grief. Yet amid the sorrow, they will hold onto the memories they shared with him—the laughter, the stories, the adventures, and the moments that defined his life.

Though Nigel Barry Young’s life ended far too suddenly, his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him. The impact he made through his friendships, his experiences, and the life he lived will not be forgotten.
