Abel Friday Death, Obituary: HICKORY, N.C. — The Hickory community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Abel Friday, a 7-year-old boy who tragically died following a drowning incident Wednesday evening at Bruce Meisner Park.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, multiple agencies responded to the park at approximately 6:52 p.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, after receiving reports of a drowning. Emergency responders arrived and located a 7-year-old male child submerged in a body of water connected to the park. Investigators said firefighters pulled Abel from approximately 10 feet of water.

Abel was immediately transported to Frye Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. Authorities confirmed that next of kin have been notified, and the incident remains under investigation by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division.

Bruce Meisner Park, a 75-acre park that opened about four years ago, is located on Cloninger Mill Road, not far from Lake Hickory. The tragedy has left the entire community shaken, as family, friends, and neighbors struggle to process the sudden loss of such a young life.

Abel was also remembered with love by his football community, which released an emotional statement honoring the young boy and the impact he made.

Mt. View Tigers Youth Football & Cheer, Abel Friday’s youth football organization, shared a heartbreaking statement following his passing,

“Our hearts are absolutely broken as we share the tragic loss of one of our own,” the statement read. “Yesterday, we lost a member of our football family in a drowning accident. Abel was more than just a player—he was a teammate, a friend, and a bright light in our program. His smile, energy, and love for the game will never be forgotten.”

The team asked the community to keep Abel’s loved ones in their prayers during this unimaginable time.

“We ask that you keep his family, friends, teammates, and coaches in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. As a community, we will come together to support one another and honor his memory.”

They closed their tribute with a message that reflects the deep love surrounding Abel’s memory:

“Rest easy, #22. You will always be part of this team.”

The loss of Abel Friday is a tragedy beyond words. A child full of life, joy, and promise was taken far too soon, leaving behind grief that will be felt for years to come by all who knew and loved him.
