Mass Shooting Omaha Today: Omaha police identify 5 officers involved in deadly shooting
It started as a disturbance involving a landlord and a tenant at a residence.
Investigators said the tenant, identified as Matthew Strain, 55, had been served an informal eviction notice 30 days earlier, and he was scheduled to vacate the residence by June 1.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said when officers arrived at the residence, Strain refused to leave his room, threatening to shoot anyone trying to enter.
Omaha police said officers got the other landlord out of the residence, and that Strain may have an AR-15-style rifle and shotgun.
Negotiations began around 3 p.m., and investigators said Strain claimed he had a stockpile of weapons and ammunition and that he would shoot at police.
Officers obtained a warrant for terroristic threats.
Around 4 p.m., the SWAT team breached the house, and that was when Omaha police said Strain began to fire.
OPD said four members of the SWAT team returned fire, two with lethal force and two with chemical munitions.
Strain died at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.
The following officers have been placed on administrative leave:
- Sgt. Sergio Gutierrez has 14 years of service.
- Off. Trevor Shoemaker has eight years of service.
- Off. Tyler Anderson has 11 years of service.
- Off. Lukas Brazier has 11 years of service.
- Off. Jaime Desautels has 17-and-a-half years of service.
The case will be presented to a grand jury after the investigation is complete, which is in accordance with state law.
