With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we remember and honor the life of Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, a devoted soldier, respected leader, and cherished mentor whose life was tragically taken in the terrorist attack at Old Dominion. His passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and the many students whose lives he helped shape.
Lt. Col. Shah served as a Professor of Military Science and the leader of the university’s ROTC program. In that role, he dedicated himself to mentoring and preparing young men and women who aspired to serve their country. To his cadets, he was far more than an instructor. He was a source of wisdom, discipline, encouragement, and inspiration. His leadership helped guide countless future officers as they prepared to take on the responsibilities of military service.
Before becoming an educator and mentor, Lt. Col. Shah built a remarkable career in the United States Army. He bravely served his nation during multiple overseas combat deployments, including Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Atlantic Resolve. During these missions, he faced the dangers of war with courage, determination, and an unwavering sense of duty.
It is a heartbreaking reality that a man who survived the hardships and dangers of combat abroad ultimately lost his life in an act of violence here at home. His death is a painful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who dedicate their lives to protecting others.
Throughout his distinguished military career, Lt. Col. Shah earned numerous honors and awards that reflected his courage, skill, and dedication to service. Among his many decorations were two Bronze Stars, recognizing his exceptional performance and bravery in combat zones. He was also awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Medal with Valor for acts of heroism and leadership.
His achievements also included the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal, each symbolizing his commitment to excellence and his impact within the military community.
Lt. Col. Shah was also a highly trained and accomplished Army aviator. He proudly earned the Senior Army Aviator Badge, demonstrating his skill and dedication in military aviation. In addition, he was awarded the Combat Action Badge, Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge—honors that reflect both his operational experience and his willingness to serve on the front lines when duty called.
Beyond the medals and titles, those who knew Lt. Col. Shah remember him for his character. He was known for his humility, strength, and genuine care for others. His leadership style was built on respect, discipline, and compassion. Whether on the battlefield or in the classroom, he carried himself with quiet confidence and a deep sense of responsibility.
