In a long‑cold case that shocked the Oceanside community for more than five decades, investigators have identified Thomas Generazio of Oceanside, New York, as the individual believed responsible for the 1974 killing of 31‑year‑old Barbara Waldman.

Generazio, who lived in Oceanside and worked as a sanitation worker, never faced charges during his lifetime; he died of cancer in 2004 at the age of 57.

The wrenching murder occurred on January 11, 1974, when Waldman was discovered in her family’s home by her young son. Law enforcement at the time determined she had been sexually assaulted and killed after being bound with her own stockings and shot in the head. The crime stunned neighbors and left the family with nothing but unanswered questions for decades.
