TPSO Provides Update on Fatal Train-Truck Collision Claiming Life of Dorian Batiste South of Amite

Dorian Batiste Death, Obituary: AMITE, Louisiana — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) Major Crash team is providing an update regarding the tragic train-truck collision that occurred on March 25, 2026, just south of the City of Amite, which claimed the life of 22-year-old Dorian Batiste.

According to initial reports, shortly before 2:30 p.m., an Amtrak train traveling southbound struck the front end of a pickup truck that was traveling eastbound across the railroad tracks on Ponders Quarters Lane. The passenger of the truck, Dorian Batiste, was ejected from the vehicle and tragically pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital Wednesday evening.

At the time of the collision, the train was carrying 149 passengers. One passenger was treated at the scene for a panic attack resulting from the impact. Emergency personnel quickly responded to secure the scene, provide medical attention, and ensure the safety of all train passengers.

The TPSO Major Crash team is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Preliminary findings indicate that a potential malfunction with the truck’s brakes may have contributed to the incident. Investigators are evaluating all aspects of the crash, including the truck’s mechanical condition and the actions of the driver.

Officials note that this particular railroad crossing does not have active warning lights or crossing arms; however, multiple signs are posted on both approaches to the tracks. These signs include instructions for drivers to yield when approaching from the east and to stop when approaching from the west.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reminds all drivers of critical safety practices when encountering railroad crossings to prevent tragedies like this:

  • Stop, look, and listen: Always stop at least 15 feet from the track, look both ways, and listen for any approaching train traffic before crossing.
  • Obey active crossings: Never attempt to drive around or under flashing lights or lowered arms at crossings that have active warning systems.
  • Be extra cautious at passive crossings: For crossings without lights or arms, take additional time to look both ways twice before proceeding across the tracks.
  • Wear seatbelts: While not all crashes are survivable, wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a collision.

“This is a heartbreaking incident, and our thoughts remain with the family of Dorian Batiste. We urge every motorist to take railroad safety seriously and to always wear their seatbelt. Following these precautions can save lives.”

The investigation by the TPSO Major Crash team is ongoing. Additional updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
