Gerard Hagedorn Death, Obituary: The members of the Hazelwood Fire Department are mourning the loss of Battalion Chief Gerard Hagedorn, who passed away yesterday after a distinguished career devoted to public service and protecting his community. His passing marks a tremendous loss not only for the department but also for the many lives he touched throughout his years of dedication to the fire service.
Gerard’s passion for serving others began early in life when he joined the Hazelwood Fire Department Explorer Post. As a young explorer, he discovered a calling that would shape the rest of his life. Inspired by the mission of helping people in their most difficult moments, Gerard committed himself to building a career rooted in courage, responsibility, and compassion.
On November 11, 2000, Gerard officially began his professional career with the Hazelwood Fire Department. From the very beginning, he distinguished himself as a dedicated firefighter and teammate, someone who approached every call with professionalism and a deep sense of duty to the community he served.
Over the years, Gerard steadily advanced through the ranks, earning the respect of his colleagues and leaders. In May 2008, he became a front-line firetruck driver/operator, a role that required exceptional skill and calm decision-making during emergency responses. His leadership qualities soon became evident, and he later earned certification as an Acting Captain.
On September 21, 2016, Gerard was promoted to Captain, a milestone that reflected both his experience and the trust placed in him by the department. His commitment to training and preparedness continued to shape the next generation of firefighters. In January 2021, Gerard achieved another major milestone when he was promoted to Battalion Chief of Training. At the same time, he was appointed Deputy Director of Emergency Management, further expanding his role in safeguarding the community.
Gerard’s commitment to public safety extended well beyond his work within the department. He played a vital role in regional and statewide emergency preparedness efforts. He served as Chair of Emergency Management for the St. Louis Area Regional Response System, helping coordinate response strategies across the region. He also represented his peers as the Region C Representative for the Missouri Emergency Management Association and served on the Advisory Committee for the Emergency Management Program Grant with Missouri State Emergency Management Agency.
Throughout his distinguished career, Gerard received numerous recognitions that reflected both his bravery and his dedication to the people he served. He was honored with multiple Life Saving Awards from the City of Hazelwood and received the Above and Beyond Award in 2009 for extraordinary customer service. In addition, he earned several Unit Citations and, in 2019, he and his crew were awarded the Medal of Bravery for their courageous actions in the line of duty. Gerard also received many heartfelt letters of appreciation from patients and citizens whose lives were positively impacted by his care and professionalism.
Yet beyond the awards and titles, those who worked alongside Gerard will remember him most for the person he was. He was a mentor, a leader, and a friend who believed deeply in teamwork and service. His calm presence during emergencies, his willingness to guide younger firefighters, and his unwavering commitment to doing the right thing left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of working with him.
Battalion Chief Gerard Hagedorn’s career stands as a testament to a life dedicated to protecting others. His legacy lives on in the firefighters he mentored, the systems he helped strengthen, and the countless lives he touched throughout the region.
